Description

Sunset Craig Peak trip

Update - Cancelled

Ducks are very much askew - weather system bearing down. Only two peopled showed interest. For now it's cancelled, but it will not be forgotten.

Description

This trip definately will require all the ducks to be aligned; good snow cover and nice frosty conditions.

Snow skills required.

Camping in the snow and walking in the dark will be features of this trip.

Day 1

Drive down to Fox Glacier township and stay at NZAC Porter Lodge. Lots of coffee stops on the way.

Day 2

Drive to the start of the track just south of Fox Glacier, then start walking up the steep track. We want to have enough time to attain the tarns and setup camp. We will then walk back towards Mt Fox for dinner and the sunset. Once the sun has set and dinner completed, we will then proceed back to the campsite

The alternative is to have dinner and walk back to the viewpoint. This is a trip where things might be a little fluid, so be prepared to be flexible.

[I will work out the timings in more detail in due course.]

Day 3

Alpine start and make our way along the ridge towards Craig Peak. I did this trip in 2010, from memory (not always reliable!) the going is straight forward. After attaining the summit we will return via the same route. We will take our lunch [last time we didn't - thinking it would be a short trip! We arrived back at the campsite at 15:30].

An early start will give us some flexibility. Ideally we will get back at the campsite, decamp and head back down. Last time it was a 13.5 hr day, but it is fun walking downhill in the bush, in the dark. Yes? Alternatively, we will stay another night at the campsite and have an early start the next day.

Day 4

Return home, either starting at the campsite on the tops, or from Porter Lodge. Again, lots of coffee stops enroute.
