Six souls met at the far end of Sewerside Drive. Ray briefed the party before they set off at a trot over the boulders. The prominent Shag Tree was passed in an hour and soon the first of four remaining baches were reached. A female party arrived by boat to spend a night at their bach. Most of these rustic buildings were erected in the 1950s, although the very first were constructed by fishermen during the 1800s.
2.5 hours of talking and walking brought us to the 18m-tall lighthouse. Somebody unlocked the padlock, then we ascended the steep spiral staircase to the top floor. Squeezing through the trap door, we were delighted to explore the wrap-around balcony outside. From the top of this structure we drank in 360-degree views of Nelson City and environs. Lunch was enjoyed in the lee of the lighthouse before we returned to the cars. Total walking time: 4.5 hours.
